Promotion: Halotherapy at Salt Therapy Spa
"I just could not put into words my joy and delight. The relief I felt after all this time was just wonderful."
These are the thoughts of just one client of Salt Therapy Spa in Malahide, which was opened in May 2010, to provide Halotherapy to the almost 1 in 5 people who suffer from ailments such as asthma, COPD and bronchiectasis, along with the many sufferers of sinusitis and hay fever.
Backed by the Fingal County Enterprise Board, a year has passed and the results are telling.
“Almost 3,000 people have come through the doors and their response has been overwhelming,” says owner Marie Lindsay, “Not only are we having fantastic results with respiratory conditions, but also with skin conditions such as Eczema and Psoriasis.
"Everyone gets a no-obligation, free session to give it a try, but once they’ve given it a go, they just keep coming back!”
Halotherapy was developed in Russia as an alternative to traditional medicines.
Having observed that those working in the salt mines of Eastern Europe suffered from no respiratory problems, scientists and doctors began to recreate the same environment in treatment centres outside the mines.
Pharmaceutical salt particles, which are anti bacterial and anti inflammatory, are granulated to <5 microns in size so that they can penetrate deep into the airways.
There they work on breaking up the mucus that is a common attribute of respiratory conditions. It is the expulsion of mucus that provides the relief so badly needed, in a drug free, non-invasive manner.
A second centre, Salt Therapy Wellness, has been opened in Blackrock and now, for the first time in Ireland, a home treatment device is available in the form of the “Saltair”, an ultrasonic salinizer which infuses salt particles into the air.
Ideal for use on a bedside locker, it can provide relief during the night and also aid snoring by helping to open the airways.
“It’s very exciting,” says Marie. “This is a therapy that can benefit a huge number of people. We feel like we’ve only just begun!”
