IT has been a hard slog, but TV3 presenter Lisa Cannon insists she is feeling "better than ever" on her new power-lifter programme.

The Xpose host, who said she was once "allergic" to exercise, has taken on the ultimate challenge and is training to become a competitive power-lifter in only eight weeks.

After signing up for three days of training a week, as well as giving her diet a complete overhaul, she is hoping to be able to lift more than 100kg at the Power-lifting Championships on April 5.

"It's going good, but I hit a plateau last week, and like any sporting activity you can lose a bit of steam a few weeks in," she said.

"But I'm mentally back on track again, and even though it's emotionally challenging, I'm figuring out that I'm quite strong-minded.

"The idea is to gain muscle, lose weight and compete all at the same time and that definitely puts a strain on you -- it's nothing I can't handle, though."

Dubliner Lisa, who got engaged to Welsh boyfriend Richard Keatley last year, told the Herald that it has been a nice way to bond with her other half too.

"He helps me make my lunches and food every night for the next day," she said.

"When I'm at home in the evenings, that's when I'm most likely to fail, but the support around me has been incredible.

"The food aspect is a bit laborious and sometimes you want to break out and devour every chocolate bar in sight.

"However, I just can't because you only let yourself down and I don't want to make those mistakes. I'll just feel guilty.

"Having Richard there is a massive help to me -- he's used to this because it's part of his lifestyle, so even though it's relatively new to me, he already gets it."

Lisa said that her "lovely granny" is one of the reasons she decided to take on the body-builder programme in the first place and start to feel better about herself.

"My granny is turning 100 in April and she's always challenged herself throughout her life because she believes in pushing yourself to be a better person, so I'm kind of doing it for her," she said.
