Getting physical and spiritual wellness is a terrible thing. I admit, there are health benefits, but generally, January is a time for the purchase of bad sportswear and trial gym memberships, and what anyone did in Januarys before the advent of fitness DVDs and celebrity diet advice is mystery to me. What I do know is there is a better way.

If your New Year’s resolutions involve physical and spiritual betterment you can fulfill your pledges with a quick spa trip - all the pampering and none of the guilt, it just makes sense.

This week, rather than lose a stone and gain a host of matrimonial difficulties, Miss Thrifty has combed Ireland in search of the best budget spa breaks - and I also have a free break up for grabs courtesy of The Brooklodge Wells Spa in Wicklow.
