Artemis Fowl ‘The Last Guardian’, by Eoin Colfer is the winner of the Specsavers Children’s Book of the Year Senior Award.

The Wexford author collected his prize at the Bord Gais Energy Irish Book Awards 2012, held recently at the RDS.

Among the other winners were Katie Taylor, Edna O’Brien, John Banville, Mary O’Rourke and Catherine Fulvio.

The book, which is published by Puffin, is the latest in the hugely popular series and the author was presented with his prize by Specsavers Ireland vice chairman Owen Blee and Niamh Sharkey Laureate na nOg.

The Last Guardian tells of Opal Koboi the power-crazed pixie who is plotting to exterminate mankind and become fairy queen.

If she succeeds, the spirits of long-dead fairy warriors will rise from the earth, inhabit the nearest available bodies and wreak mass destruction. Can Artemis and Captain Holly Short of the Lower Elements Police stop Opal and prevent the end of the world?
