Calls for DUMP scheme

Pharmacists want a nationwide DUMP (Disposal of Unused Medicines Safely) scheme to be introduced to encourage the public to dispose of unused or out-of-date medicines safely.

It could help to cut down on the risk of suicide, deliberate self-harm and accidental poisoning in children.

Specialised collection and disposal services are required for the disposal of medicines. The HSE had funded clinical waste collections in the Dublin area as a suicide prevention initiative, but this was ended two years ago.

President of the Irish Pharmacy Union, Kathy Maher, said it would be an "important measure to prevent the problems associated with holding on to unused or out-of-date medicines".
