Flu claimed the lives of 75 patients in Ireland over the winter. These are official laboratory-confirmed figures and the real number who died from complications of the flu is higher.

Some 48 of those who died contracted swine flu. The average age was 64 years.

Over the course of the winter,1,842 patients with confirmed flu were hospitalised. And 156 had to be placed in critical care units.

The flu season has come to an end in Europe, with almost all countries now reporting low activity for a number of weeks.

Swine flu was responsible for the majority of patients in intensive care units due to the illness.
