Happiness upgrade… Do the washing up
Published 03/05/2015 | 02:30
According to Eckhart Tolle, author of the mega-bestselling Power of Now, we can find enlightenment, peace and great joy in… doing the washing up. No, really! Tolle argues that we all spend our lives either living in the past or worrying about the future and as a result we are never really in the only moment that ever exists: the now.
He says that the only way to find peace of mind is to focus on what's happening right now - even if it's not very exciting. So try it: concentrate totally on what you are doing - if you are doing the dishes, pay attention to the sound and the feel of the water, the movement of your hands, the weight of the plates in your hand. Notice the light in the room, any sounds. Notice how your body
feels and take in deep slow breaths. How does it feel?
Tolle believes that every time we focus on our body and our physical surroundings, instead of getting lost in our thoughts, we find a serenity, stillness and calm. We'll also have a nice and clean kitchen.
