Pop open the bubbly! Women are taking over the wine cellar, according to the Institute of Masters of Wine.

Only 295 people (91 of them female) are entitled to add the prestigious letters MW to their name. Yet of the 302 candidates who put themselves through the institute's blind-tasting and essay examinations last week, 171 were women and 131 men, suggesting that, pass rate permitting, men may soon find themselves outnumbered in wine's most exclusive club.

Since 1953, a total of 366 men and women have passed the institute's exams and become Masters of Wine.

There are currently 313 Masters of Wine, living in 24 different countries, the institute stated.
