Domaine de Bisconte Côtes du Roussillon 2008 -- a flavoursome and ripe, balanced mouthful of luscious cherries, tinged with smoky spice, liquorice and a generous finish from a blend of 30pc Carignan, 40pc Syrah and 30pc Grenache and a quality-conscious producer. 13pc alc. €11 Widely available in independent off-licences.
Domaine La Croix Hautes Corbières Le Fournas 2007 -- a blend of old vine Carignan (55pc), Syrah and Grenache; balanced, with mouthfilling, fresh fruit-of-the-forest flavours and intense spice. Unoaked, but great depth. 14.5pc. €7 (down from €10.99 until April 20) Available from Superquinn.
Château La Baronne Montagne d'Alaric Corbières 2005 -- Delicious brambly fruit, intense spice and a vibrant, herby, savoury kick in an elegant, silky smooth blend of Carignan, Grenache and Mourvèdre from a small family-owned winery. 14pc alc. €11.45 Available from winesdirect.ie (minimum order six bottles).
