Mineralstein Riesling 2008 -- a blend of grapes from Mosel's slate vineyards and the basalt soils of the Pfalz region; the latter brings weight to this medium-dry style, with plump, nectarine flavours, reined in by a balancing minerality and plenty of zest. 11.5pc alcohol. Great with Thai food. €9.99 Available from Marks & Spencer. Sophie Bertin Sancerre 2008 -- grapes grown on flinty soils provide the mineral backbone underpinning Sancerre's piercing grassy, nettley flavours, with asparagus and lemon and a green-apple finish. 12.5pc alc. Enjoy with fish, goat's cheese or tomato-based tarts. €12.95 (reduced from €15.95 for April) Available from O'Briens. Chablis Domaine Eugenie Carrion 2008 -- rich but steely with intense apple flavours; citrus and floral notes, with a lingering spicy finish. Not a Premier Cru, but in the same class. 12.5pc alc. Perfect with fish. €14.95 Available from www.vineyards-direct.com.
