Put to the test: Tinned peas

Published 30/09/2010 | 05:00

Tinned peas come in salted water with sugar, so are sweeter and often mushier than their fresh cousins.

All the peas below taste more or less the same apart from Lidl's Marrowfat peas, which contain a hint of mint. Surprisingly the protein content varies but there wasn't much difference in the sugar and salt content overall, or indeed in the price.

Lidl freshona marrowfat processed peas, 410g

Score: 4/5

Verdict: We were slightly taken aback by the vibrant green colour when we opened the tin, but if you can get over that, we liked the fresher flavour the marrowfat and mint provides. These are 'reduced salt' peas and contain the lowest at 0.51g per 100g. They also have the lowest sugar at 1.3g, the second highest protein content at 6.2g per 100g and are the cheapest of those tested.

Price: €0.25 (€0.61/Kg)

Tesco processed peas, 420g

Score: 3.5/5

Verdict: The exact same price as the peas from both Superquinn and SuperValu and to be honest they all tasted pretty much the same; sweet and nice. These have double the protein content though at 11.8g per 100g and the second lowest salt content at 0.6g per 100g. However, the sugar content is more than double the others at 5.3g per 100g.

Price: €0.50 (€1.19 / Kg)

Aldi sweet harvest irish processed peas, 420g

Score: 3.5/5

Verdict: Given we couldn't detect much of a taste difference in these peas, and those of Superquinn and SuperValu, these score next best because they are second cheapest and have a slightly lower salt content at 0.76g per 100g.

Price: €0.39 (€0.93 / Kg)

Superquinn processed peas, 420g

Score: 3/5

Verdict: Similar in taste and the exact same price as Tesco and SuperValu's peas, these come next with the same protein content as Aldi's peas (5.6g per 100g) and slightly lower salt than SuperValu's peas at 0.76g per 100g.

Price: €0.50 (€1.19 / Kg)

supervalu processed peas, 420g

Score: 3/5

Verdict: We're splitting hairs as these peas have the same price as Tesco and Superquinn and the same sugar content as Superquinn's. The salt content is highest though per 100g (0.79g) and the protein content slightly lower than the others at 5.22g per 100g.

Price: €0.50 (€1.19 / Kg)
