Put to the test: Relish

It's always good to have a decent relish in the fridge so that you can dress up some cheese or cold meat and make it all a lot tastier.

These relishes are mainly red pepper relishes, apart from Tesco's, which is tomato only. Looking at the listed ingredients they are all pretty good, with very few ingredients you wouldn't find in your kitchen and none at all in Ballymaloe's relish.

We scored on taste, and also on ingredients and price. That said, I'd be happy to eat any of them.Ballymaloe Jalapeno Pepper Relish, 280g

Price: €3.05 at Superquinn (€10 / Kg)

Verdict: Admittedly the most expensive of the lot, but this one tastes really good. It contains the most 'bits', in other words, pieces of red pepper, and it really tasted of red pepper. The taste was naturally sweet rather than sugary sweet. Nothing artificial is listed in the ingredients and it also contains the least amount of calories per 100g (109) and is made in Cork.

Score: 4 / 5marks & spencer peri-peri relish, 280g

Price: €1.59 (€5.68 / Kg)

Verdict: A little different to the other relishes, this one contains peri peri sauce, which I'm guessing is something hot and also 'birdseye chillies'. It has lots of crunchy bits and would indeed make your eyes water, if you take a big mouthful as I did! Made in the UK it contains 110 calories per 100g, the second lowest of those tested. If you like your food hot, you'll like it. The second best price too.

Score: 3.5 / 5

supervalu supreme fire roasted pepper relish, 285g

Price: €2.45 (€8.60 / Kg)

Verdict: If you don't like your relish too hot then this one is a good choice. Produced in Ireland, this relish has something of a gel-like consistency, which is different to the others tasted and has less pepper 'bits'. Surprisingly, grape juice is the second listed ingredient. But you really get the fire roasted taste and it smells good too.

Score: 3.5 / 5

tesco american style tomato relish, 300g

Price: €0.67 (€2.23 / Kg)

Verdict: The cheapest of the lot by a long way this one contains lots of gherkin, which you can see in the relish and really helps give a good spicy taste. It tastes heavy on sugar though, and while it's very spicy it's also very sweet. It contains 135 calories per 100g.

Score: 3 / 5

specially selected chargrilled red pepper irish country relish, 320g, aldi

Price: €1.99 (€6.22 / Kg)

Verdict: This relish is 'handmade in Cork', and contains 112 calories per 100g serving. There are plenty of red pepper 'bits' in the relish, giving it a good texture. It is quite sweet but in my opinion you can taste too much of the tomato and not enough of the pepper.

Score: 3 / 5
