Put to the test: Christmas pudding

Lidl deluxe matured christmas pudding, 454g
Verdict: This contains brandy, sherry, cognac and rum and is 'six months matured'. There is a good mix and quantity of fruit and nuts, and the ingredient list is good.
Price: €4.99 (€10.99/Kg)
Score: 9 / 10
M&S classic christmas pudding, 454g
Verdict: Again, something a little different from M&S as this pudding tastes lighter, brighter and more exotic than most of the others and is plenty juicy. Cider, sherry and rum are the alcohol of choice in this one, it contains 39% dried fruit, and it was cheapest.
Price: €3.49 (€7.69 / Kg)
Score: 8 / 10
Superquinn sq rich christmas plum pudding, 900g
Verdict: It's a huge price, but you do get to keep the ceramic bowl this 'hand crafted' pudding comes in. It tastes very good; spicy and juicy with apricots, cherries and a lot of sultanas (31%), along with whiskey and stout.
This is a quality pudding but the prices of the others here show that you can get tasty for less.
Price: €19.99 (€22.21 / Kg)
Score: 7 / 10
Tesco finest irish christmas pudding, 454g
Verdict: This one doesn't contain as much fruit, or variety of it, as the others and we felt it suffered for it. The Irish whiskey, stout and poitín it contains did the trick, though, as the alcohol flavour really comes through.
Price: €7 (€15.42 / Kg)
Score: 6 / 10
Aldi specially selected holly lane christmas pudding, 750g
Verdict: This has the second-best price and, like Lidl's pudding, is 'six month matured'. It is 'brandy infused' and while you can taste that, it wasn't as fruity as we would have liked.
Price: €7.49 (€9.99 /Kg)
Score: 5.5 / 10
