As well as sugar and fat content, we checked the calorie count, the taste, the price and nutritional information provided.

Aldi Belmont Milk Chocolate Digestives, 400g

Score: 4/5

Verdict: Joint cheapest alongside Lidl's biscuits, these had a good crunchy and crisp biscuit base. There wasn't much of a chocolate hit, but then sadly there wasn't with any of the biscuits we tasted. There is clear nutritional information and the biscuits contain 493 calories per 100g, 28.2g sugar and 23.8g fat per 100g.

Price: €0.69 (€1.72 / Kg)

Lidl Tower Gate Milk Chocolate Digestives, 400g

Score: 3.5/5

Verdict: The same price as Aldi's biscuits, an almost identical ingredient list and the same taste. The calorie count is higher at 499 calories per 100g (the highest of those tested), but the sugar and fat content are similar at 28.3g and 23.8g per 100g respectively.

Price: €0.69 (€1.72 / Kg)

Tesco Milk Chocolate Digestives, 300g

Score: 3.5/5

Verdict: These biscuits, and those from SuperValu and Spar tasted similar, and had a less crunchy biscuit base than the two above. Still, the taste wasn't hugely different. There is good nutritional information on this packaging, and 490 calories, 26.5g of sugar and 22.8g fat per 100g.

Price: €1.15 (€3.83 / Kg)

Spar Milk Chocolate Digestives, 300g

Score: 3/5

Verdict: A decent biscuit, but little chocolate taste. There are 490 calories per 100g, a good dose of sweetness with 28.2g sugar per 100g and 23.7g of fat.

Price: €1.39 (€4.63 / Kg)

SuperValu Elkes Milk Chocolate Digestives, 300g

Score: 3/5

Verdict: The dearest of the lot. In a blind tasting you'd be hard pressed to tell one from another. There are 494 calories, the lowest sugar content at 23.8g per 100g and 24.4g fat per 100g.

Price: €1.65 (€5.50 / Kg)
