They had me with their font – big, shaded capital letters that hint of communism. From its very discrete signage to the outdoor tables with elegant blankets, you know the brand spanking new Bakers Coffee café is a place oozing with style. And what a location, a corner plot with glass walls on two sides, it has the canal basin in front.

The Cost: €4.94 for breakfast deal of toastie and coffee.

The Look: Inside is a wonderfully calming space, all neutral greys, wood and metal, industrial but not harshly so. Big tan leather banquettes and trendy design mags clipped to the wall. A waitress who calls me pet on the first visit and tap water served in old-fashioned milk bottles.

The Goods: Apparently they live up to their name and bake on site but it is still a decidedly short food menu. Toasties, granola and fruit for breakfast; soup, various wraps and ciabatta and croque monsieur for lunch.

The Bad: Ah, what a shame. The toastie is extremely dry, three middling sausages sliced between buttered slices of toasted batch that crumbles like cardboard. It is at best okay. I am not given a napkin, nor cutlery apart from a coffee spoon that doubles up as a sauce spoon when I try to rescue the toastie with ketchup.

The Result: But it would be transformed with some homemade chutney, perhaps a sprig of rocket, something. The coffee, on the other hand, is heavenly. Smooth and soothing, it makes me linger much longer than I realise until a call from the office breaks my reverie. This is a lovely place just to be, go soon before the hipsters invade.
