The Restaurant Association of Ireland (RAI) took place last night and the country's best dining spots were announced.

At Monday night's award ceremony in Dublin's Clayton Hotel, a female chef was named best in Ireland.

Dannie Barry, the only female chef in Ireland to be awarded a Michelin star, is head chef at Deanes Eipic in Belfast.

Last week, the RAI came under criticism for its failure to support female chefs in the industry when it was announced that it had instated an all-male panel for its annual Restaurant Awards.

Dublin's Chapter One restaurant, the Parnell Street spot owned by chef Ross Lewis, was named Best Restaurant and also took home the capital's top award for customer service.

Forest and Marcy was another big winner of the night, taking home Best Emerging Irish Cuisine and being crowned Dublin's Best Newcomer.

The Leeson Street restaurant was also honoured with Dublin's Best Chef award for Ciaran Sweeney.

This year a new award, Pub of the Year, was presented to Morrissey's of Co Laois, with Best Gastro Pub going to Walled City Brewery in Co Derry.

Tipperary's Riot Rye Bakehouse and Breadschool took home Best Cookery School Award, while Phibsborough coffee shop Two Boys Brew was recognised with the Best Digital Marketing award.
