You can forget your calorific fry-up this Saturday as an Irish company is getting set to dole out more than three million servings of porridge as part of RTE's Operation Transformation.

Flahavan's are getting set to celebrate the inaugural Free Porridge Day this Saturday and are giving away 200,000 bags of the breakfast favourite in supermarkets nationwide.

The Limited Edition Operation Transformation packs will be available in Supervalu, Tesco, EuroSpar and Dunnes Stores across Ireland on January 28.

Speaking of the initiative, the programme's resident doctor Professor Donal O'Shea stressed the positive impact porridge can have on the health of the nation.

"There are many reasons why porridge is the best breakfast food especially if you wish to control weight," he said.

"Porridge oats will not only help you feel fuller for longer but they will also kick-start your metabolism and make it work more efficiently. Young or old, oats are good for everyone in the family. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for your health – and porridge is the best start," he said.

John Flahavan, Managing Director of the company, said the partnership is one which Flahavan’s can fully get behind as the RTE show has such an impact on the health of Irish people each year.

"We believe that this is a unique opportunity for Flahavan's to join up with Operation Transformation to reach every corner of Ireland and encourage each and every household to think differently about how they start their day to live longer, live better," he added.
