An innovative bar manager is set to open Ireland’s first beer garden – in a shipping container.

Donegal man Jimmy Kennedy, is set to use steel shutters on the pub container as shelter from the rain.

But he insisted the recent good weather and with more hot weather forecast for next week, patrons won’t need to be sheltered.

Jimmy, who runs The Brewery Bar in Letterkenny, came up with the ideaafter a recent trip to New York where he ran the very successful Jimmy K’s Bar in Yonkers for over 20 years. A very experienced publican, Jimmy knew he needed to extend the existing pub footprint to meet increased footfall and to cater for the growing beer garden population - and he knew he wanted something new and different – something cool.

"Donegal has been named the Coolest Place to visit in the world this year and there has been a big increase in the number of visitors to the county,” said Jimmy.

"Letterkenny is a hub for the Wild Atlantic Way and that is bringing more and more people to the town.

"The Donegal rally is also on next weekend and we had been looking at extending the premises and opening a beer garden, especially after the wonderful weather in May.

"I know a Cork man opened a pub in a shipping container in London a couple of years ago and I thought it was time we had one here in Ireland.

"It’s very functional and is perfect for an outdoor space."

Jimmy laughed: “The shutters will provide a wee bit of shelter in the unlikely event we get an odd shower over the summer.”
