Although the Ballinteer native has been nurturing his love of cookery since appearing on the TV3 show, he will be leaving the main catering to the professionals at his upcoming wedding next month.

However, the Celebrity Masterchef 2013 winner will be putting his skills in the kitchen to some use by baking one of the three wedding cakes, the star of which is being made by his 91-year-old grandmother.

“She’s making her famous fruitcake, which I love,” said the former athlete.

“I’m going to make a cake so we’re going to have an array on the table.

“It’s more important to have my grandmother’s cake than just going out and buying one,” he added.

relocate

David (31) is marrying fellow runner Charlotte Wickham on August 23 in his English bride’s native city of Newcastle.

The pair have been dating for five years and are now based in Dublin after Charlotte made the big decision to relocate to the capital.

With not long to go ‘til the big day, the Dublin star said the excitement and nerves are starting to build.

“We’re in the home straight now,” he said.

“In the equivalent to the 400m, the lactic acid is beginning to build and you’re getting tired!”

The champion runner confirmed his retirement from sport two weeks ago after several years of frustrating injury setbacks and it appears the Dundrum-native is focusing on health and nutrition to fill the void.

He has a weekly slot on TV3’s Ireland AM called Food For Fuel and has just helped to launch  Johnston, Mooney and O’Brien’s range of Sandwich Thins for which he’s put together a range of fillings.

“A lot more people are focusing on what they’re eating and I think the more people who take control of their lifestyle, the better,” he said.
