An elderly American couple has joked that they have the makings of their own village after welcoming their 100th grandchild.

Leo and Ruth Zanger from Illinois are just one year shy of their 60th anniversary and have twelve children, 53 grand children, 46 great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The pair welcomed their Jaxton Leo last month and said they felt blessed with their large family.

"The good Lord has just kept sending them," Leo told The Quincy Herald-Whig.

"We could start our own town."

Although the grandparents have more than eight dozen grandchildren happy granny Ruth said there is always space for another.

“There's always room for one more,” Ruth said happily.
