It will be an emotional September in Blacklion, as Neven Maguire and his wife Amelda will wave goodbye to their twins Conor and Lucia (4) at the school gates for the first time.
The Cavan-based chef (42) revealed that although the twins do not turn five until next February, he and Amelda decided that it was the right time for the pair to tackle Junior Infants.
“We were in two minds whether to keep them at home for another year but we just felt the time was right to start them,” said Neven speaking to The Irish Daily Mail.
“”It’s going to be very emotional and there will be tears. I will bring Amelda somewhere for a few hours, somewhere special because I know it’s a big deal.
I know it’s going to be great for them, but when you have a young family it is a huge upheaval in your life. But it’s a good school and more importantly, they are ready for it,” he said.
Meanwhile, the chef has said it’s important to spend time with children in the kitchen, as it forms a platform for them later in life.
“It's about meals you can all eat together,” he told The Sunday Independent.
“With a lot of the recipes, you can make them and freeze them. I'm no expert on them, but I know what we've been through. After the twins were born, my wife was very ill for about six months. But she made an amazing recovery and, thank God, we have put it behind us. It made me reflect on what I was doing.
“It was a reality check for me. I cut back on what I was doing and learnt to prioritise. I started to say 'no' more often, and now Mondays and Tuesdays are my days off. We usually bring the kids swimming, or do something else active with them. They are the best thing that ever happened in my life and I'm so much happier. They are what it is all about,” he said.
