American dad Josh Marshall, from Kansas, wanted to make his son Gabriel (8) feel better about his scarring beneath his right ear, which was left behind after surgery to remove a tumour.

The caring dad said the surgery left his son “feeling like a monster”, according to BuzzFeed News.

People would stare at Gabriel’s scar in public and his dad Josh revealed that the tattoo was a way of taking the unwanted attention away from the little boy.

"This broke my heart," Marshall said.

"I told him if people wanted to stare, they could stare at both of us."

The photograph of the pair went viral when it was entered in the St. Baldrick Foundation’s Best Bald Dad competition.
