Hello freedom!

  • Go To

Now that it's time for the kids to go back to school, many parents are either rejoicing or tearfully realising that the little ones will no longer be at home for six hours during the day.

Getting them organised and ready for school brings its own set of struggles, but if you're anything like us, you're already daydreaming about what you're going to do with all that extra free time.

1. Peace and quiet

You can sit silently for hours on end without hearing "What are we going to do today?"

2. Less negotiating

There'll be less bickering between siblings as they're separated for large chunks of the day.

3. Go to the bathroom without fear of being interrupted

Ah, the glorious uninterrupted bathroom visit. Run a bath, take a shower or just sit there with a magazine and take your time without waiting for the little taps on the door: "Mam, mam, maaaaaam, mam... the dog ate my ice-cream and it's all over the floor. Mam, mam... maaaaaaaam!"

4. Enjoy your coffee

Have you ever tried to enjoy a coffee and catch up on the morning's events without someone on your hip asking you to put Peppa Pig on?

5. Walk around the house without being followed

You'd almost be forgiven for thinking it was your shadow until it stars talking and asks for a treat.

6. Step down from your role as Director of Entertainment

You won't have to hear so many "I'm bored" comments as you rack your brains for ways to keep them occupied.

7. Go shopping... for yourself

Shopping with children can be a nightmare. Even a trip to Tesco can be wrought with grief as boredom kicks in and the little ones request Coco Pops as compensation for time spent wandering the aisles with you. You usually leave the shop without getting that one thing you went there for in the first place.

8. Eat whatever you want

You can take your time creating the perfect lunch and you can actually sit down to enjoy it without sharing.

9. Routine

Come September proper bed times, meal times, after-school activity times and play times make everything so much easier. When you eventually establish a good routine, you feel like you can conquer anything.

10. Miss them

Despite everything, when the house or office is quiet at 1pm, you'll really going to miss them.
