JACK’s still the lad as parents ensured the name remained the most popular amongst boys last year.

And most new-born girls continue to be named Emily, which again topped the list of names.

Data from the Department of Foreign Affairs shows that of the 53,046 passports issued to children under the age of three last year, 574 were named Jack.

Parents’ tastes were largely unchanged from 2013, as names such as James, Daniel, Conor and Adam remained most popular.

While 456 passports were issued to girls named Emily, last year saw Sophie jump two places into second spot, with the classic name Aoife dropping three positions to sixth place.

Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan said he was “disappointed” his name had dropped two spots according to the latest figures.

“Amelia and Lily entered the top ten names for girls, and while I was disappointed to see Charlie drop two places, I am pleased that it remains in the top ten for boys.

“The names reflect the continued popularity of traditional Irish names, such as Aoife and Oisín, and the vibrant multiculturalism in today’s Ireland, with Zuzanna and Kacper the highest new entries,” he said.

Mr Flanagan added: “I would like to take this opportunity to remind Irish people to check the validity of their passports and those of their families, and to perhaps renew now, ahead of the summer rush. Last year, almost 630,000 passports we issued, a quarter of which were issued in May and June.”
