Parents have been advised by Operation Transformation dietician Aoife Hearne to lead by example when it comes to what their children eat.
"Children should start ideally with finger food from six-months-old - encouraging children to feed themselves from the start is quite important," she said.
"I have a toddler myself and I really encouraged him to feed himself from the start."
Aoife, who is mum to 15-month-old Dylan and is expecting again in May, is ideally placed to offer advice to other mums-to-be .
"Get your fruits and vegetables in, get good quality fish and eat your whole grains," she said.
"I'm definitely not getting as much exercise at this stage as I would have in my last pregnancy, but in an ideal world, staying active during pregnancy is important."
Meanwhile, speaking about the hit RTE show, she said Operation Transformation is not about anyone starting a diet.
"It really is about making life-long change, and I suppose the one thing for me is always that I'm always looking to see if what the leaders are doing is sustainable," she said.
"The weight loss isn't always the thing that's going to make me pleased or not in a week.
