COULD this be the reason why Fine Gael TD John Deasy has had something of a spring in his step of late? His beautiful wife, RTE presenter Maura Derrane, 43, is expecting their first child.
The couple are delighted with the news.
Maura, the co-host of RTE's popular daily afternoon Today with Daithi O Se, told me yesterday: "John and I are thrilled that we are expecting a baby at the end of June.
"I will be off the air as the Today show finishes in March, which is perfect timing," she said, adding that the baby would be born in Holles Street hospital in Dublin.
The set of the Today show in Cork will be transformed, with Daithi becoming a father for the first time when wife, former New Jersey Rose, Rita gives birth in March, followed later in the summer by Inis Mor beauty Maura's new arrival.
"It will be baby central," laughed Maura yesterday.
She and John – who met in 2002 at a Fine Gael Christmas party at the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin and got married in May, 2005, in Rome – live in Waterford, where John has his constituency since 2002.
Last October, John's opinions about his boss after the referendum defeat on the abolition of the Senate landed him on the front page of Sunday Independent under the headline: 'Enda's Nemesis? Has John Deasy landed a wallop.'
"I always know that John will speak his mind on whatever issue he feels strongly about," Maura said.
"I was not surprised he spoke out on this, considering the result of the referendum was an obvious defeat for Fine Gael. He didn't tell me he was going to speak out and he never does. Maybe he thinks I might try and persuade him not to sometimes."
