RTE presenter Claire Byrne has revealed she is expecting her second child.

The 'Prime Time' host admitted her hectic schedule will soon be even busier – with two children under the age of one.

"It is a bit of a happy surprise. For a short time we'll have two babies under one. It is going to be a bit of a challenge," said Claire of her new arrival, who is expected this autumn.

Just last October, Claire and her fiance Gerry Scollan (right), celebrated the arrival of their son Patrick.

"It will be a bit of company for Patrick," she said of their six-month old, who is a "very mellow baby".

The broadcaster, who also presents an RTE 1 radio show 'Saturday with Claire Byrne', said they had not put any "great thought" into adding to their family.

"But I'll be 39 this summer so I've not an endless amount of time," she told the Irish Independent.

"Gerry would have 10 children if he could," she laughed.

"I never plan anything and I don't prepare with military precision. I grew up in a family of six children but I'm not saying I'm going to have six."

After the birth of Patrick, Claire, who is self-employed, returned after 10 weeks maternity leave to work in 'Prime Time' on RTE, which she hosts with Miriam O'Callaghan.

"I took two weeks off before he was born and 10 weeks afterwards. You can never predict how it will go – if everything goes well the intention is after taking 12 weeks off I'll go back," she said.

However, she cautioned that you can "never predict".

Claire enjoys a busy schedule as she hosts two 'Prime Time' shows a week, one Morning Ireland show and her Saturday radio programme. She joined RTE in 2010.

She said it suits her to work "long hours" on certain days, and then take other days off.

And the couple have decided not to find out the sex of the baby in advance.

"Before Patrick was born I didn't find out," she said, adding they had "trouble" deciding on the name for their firstborn.

"I don't care in the least if it is a boy or girl – the only thing I'll say is that when I'm buying clothes for boys I'll gravitate towards the pink dresses," she said, adding she had informed her managers in RTE of her news yesterday.

Claire and Gerry got engaged in March 2013 after dating for a year.
