Private backers for DIT campus

A new college campus will go ahead with private backing despite the Government's plan to scrap capital funding for the project.

Michael Hand, CEO of the Grangegorman Development Agency, said plans by the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) to incorporate all of its 39 colleges around Dublin into a single campus on the grounds of the former St Brendan's psychiatric hospital will proceed. It's hoped the facility will open by 2017.

The project, which has been in the pipeline for almost a decade, will cost close to €500m. The Government had planned to contribute 20pc of the costs of the project.

Mr Hand outlined the plan yesterday, during the first day of hearings by An Bord Pleanala into the redevelopment plans for the 75-acre DIT site. The hearing resumes today.
