The heavenly things that lie ahead of those horrific exams and deadlines...

You’re nearly there, there is light at the end of the exam tunnel. Summer is soon approaching and if it’s anything like last summer, we’ll all be in for a treat.

Here are some of the highlights of what you can look forward to at the end of the term:

1. Ice cream trucks

That God-awful tune may get stuck in your head for hours on end, but the ice cream truck is a sure fire sign that summer is here.

Whether it’s a traditional 99 scoop down at Teddy’s in Dun Laoghaire, or simply a Magnum Classic, make sure to treat yourself once in a while. Also, don’t forget to buy that blue Mr Freeze, that you’ll let melt in the sun so as to taste the cool pop juice. Nothing better.

2. The beach

Whether it be a clichéd horse-riding trip or a simple surfing getaway, you have a world of choice with the beaches in Ireland.

Inch Strand in Kerry, Bundoran in Donegal and Sandycove in Dublin are a couple of the prime locations for sunning yourself, if we’re lucky enough to get some sun.

3. Road-trips

Hopefully at this stage, you have a friend or two who can drive. If that’s the case, give them a few euros towards petrol and get them to drive you somewhere in Ireland.

Galway is always a hotspot, but wherever you go, try your best not to drag sand back in the car.

4. Long days

An obvious one, but still a great one. The sun sets at around 9 p.m. When you were younger, bright nights were a great excuse to guilt your parents into letting you stay out late. These days, it’s more of a reminder that you’re a true party animal, considering that you always manage to get home when it’s light out.

5. Summer festivals

Forbidden Fruit, Strawberry Fest, Galway Fringe, Electric Picnic; the list goes on. Dancing outside in the summer breeze, with plastic cups of beer only adds to the hopefully brilliant line-ups that will take over the Irish stages this summer.

6. A chance to tan

Do you have skin pigments that welcome sunlight and convert it into a sun-kissed glow, summer is your friend?

Well then summer is your friend. Whether it be by a pool in Spain, or on a lilo in your back garden, get rid of the Sally Hanson and take in those rays. It also invites the attractive sight of farmer tans.

7. Eating outdoors

The salad counter at Superquinn is at its busiest in the summer months. You eat the finest of cold meats and the umbrella goes up in the back garden. Barbecues are one of the highlights of a summer, so organise and attend as many as you can.

8. Beer gardens

A similar sentiment as the one above, being able to have a pint outside is one of the little gems of June, July and August. I’m not trying to endorse the smoking habit, but at least the summer is a welcome break from huddling under canopies, in the hopes of not getting soaked while fitting in a quick cigarette.

9. Silly accessories

Anklets, daisy hairbands and over-the-top sunglasses are sure to make a show in this year’s summer fashion. However, in the spirit of the season, no one cares to judge. Feel free to judge socks and sandals. They’re stupid every day of the year.
