The programme offers flexibility with eight different degree streams open to students who delay decisions about specialisation until the end of first year, and again at the end of second year.

"It is a great course for someone who does not know what area of science they want to pursue," said Eoghan.

Eoghan's main interest was biology, so he opted for the biological science route in second year, and now in third year, he is specialising in neuroscience.

As well as focusing on his own studies, the 21-year-old former pupil of Bandon Grammar School finds time to help other students make the transition to third level.

"When I came into first year, I had a peer supporter who emailed me regularly to ensure that everything was okay. It is a really good system, and I wanted to be part of it," said Eoghan who signed up as a volunteer in second year.

Eoghan expects to graduate with his BSc in neuroscience next year and he is not sure what he will do then, but among the options he is considering is postgraduate study in medicine.

While Eoghan has taken the BS Neuroscience route, other options available to students on this course are BSc Chemistry, BSc Chemistry with Forensic Science; BSc Chemistry of Pharmaceutical Compounds and BSc Education in Physical Sciences; Biochemistry; Microbiology; Neuroscience; Physiology.
