More than 7,000 college places have already been snapped up for the new term.
As Leaving Certificate candidates await their results and offers, others received the good news in the past week.
Leaving Cert results will be issued to 55,000 candidates on Wednesday, while CAO round one offers will be made next Monday, August 22.
However, before the main, round one, there is a round zero for applicants who are not competing for places with those awaiting exam results, or who have presented other qualifications.
The latter includes over 14,000 CAO applicants who pursued a place in higher education using a qualification from a Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) course.
This "back door" route is growing in popularity as a way of entering third-level education and amounted to almost one in five CAO applicants this year.
There is also an early round in July when a small number of offers of places are issued to applicants that have deferred places or mature applicants.
At the end of round zero, a total of 7,118 CAO applicants had accepted an offer. There will be around 45,000-46,000 college places in total this year.
The CAO round two offers will be made on Thursday September 1 and the offer/acceptance season will continue until October 19.
