A MAYOR has started a campaign to have the Chinese language Mandarin included on the curriculum for school children.
Galway mayor Cllr Terry O'Flaherty said she was pushing for its inclusion as there would be great career prospects for students.
"The visit last year of the then Chinese vice-president, Xi Jinping, to Ireland and the trade links which were established will benefit our country greatly.
"I earnestly feel that introducing Mandarin into the school curriculum would benefit our country in the years to come," she added.
She has tabled a motion for Galway City Council and is looking for support from other local authorities around Ireland.
