Junior Cert metalwork candidates were only working for 25pc of their marks yesterday, as they already had a project and practical work done.

And even at that there was no cause for concern.

Kenny Donagher, of the ASTI and Summerhill College, Sligo, said there was very little on the higher-level paper that they would not have been expecting. He described ordinary level as "quite straightforward".

But Mr Donagher said the higher-level project completed during the year was quite challenging even for the best candidates.

Donal Cremin, also of ASTI and Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore, Co Kerry, described the higher-level paper as "grand" and well-received by students.
