Chance for budding young writers to bloom

Budding young writers are being urged to get into creative gear for a children's short story competition at the Dalkey Book Festival .

Organisers are looking for stories on the subject of summertime of no more than 700 words. The competition is aimed at children aged under 13.

A prizewinner will be selected in two categories -- nine and under and 10-13 years.

The south Dublin event kicks off on June 15 and runs for three days.

Both winners will receive prizes including books, festival tickets and a two- night family stay with dinner in Fitzpatrick's Castle Hotel.

The competition is being supported by KBC Bank.

Writers attending the festival include Derek Landy, the author of the 'Skulduggery Pleasant' series who has sold 17 million books, as well as author and actress Pauline McLynn, who will be talking about her latest book, and children's authors Alan Early and Judi Curtin.
