EMPLOYERS in Ireland are generally happy with the quality of higher education graduates, according to the first survey of its type.

However, concerns were identified about graduates' abilities to communicate effectively, especially in writing, and about graduates having the "right attitude".

The survey, which was conducted late last year, was developed by a group of Ireland's main business organisations at the request of, and in collaboration with, the Higher Education Authority.

A key finding was that 75pc of companies were confident that graduates had the right workplace and transferable skills and relevant knowledge.

It also emerged that employers would like to see more links between third-level colleges and industry.

The survey, which was undertaken as part of the reforms under way in higher education, will now be carried out regularly to inform policy and practice.
