American couple Dale and Alice Rockey have been celebrated for 81 years of marriage by the 'Longest Married Couple Project'.

The project is managed by the Californian Christian group 'Worldwide Marriage Encounter'.

The pair are the longest-married couple out of a total 375 nominees to the project.

The couple were childhood sweethearts, growing up 'just a couple of blocks' away from each other in their hometown of Hemingford, Nebraska.

They married on December 29th, 1933 (their marriage licence cost $2) and went on to have five sons, 15 grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

Speaking to the Kansas City Star, Dale said "you're damn right!" that the couple are still in love.

Alice Rockey(99) explained the success of their marriage to the paper.

"I always let him have my way", she chuckled.

"We've had a wonderful life", Dale added.

Their son Tom Rockey(71) praised the couple for the "good example" they set for their children - all of whom are happily married to their first sweethearts.

Dale and Alice have been described as 'totally devoted to one another' by those that know them.

"You don't see them together without holding hands", Tom said.

The project reports that many of the honoured couples 'aren't quite sure what the fuss is about".

Recently, Dale was asked by a reporter whether he was proud of how long his marriage had lasted.

"No", he replied.

“Dale, you're not understanding!" Alice shouted in the background. “He asked if you’re proud of being married so long... Are you proud?”

“Proud of it?" Dale replied. "You bet!"
