Norwood Thomas (93) and Joyce Durrant (88) met in London when he was a 21-year-old soldier but their romance came to an end when he was deployed to Normandy.

The pair lost touch for more than 72 years, and Ms Durrant settled in Adelaide in Australia.

Mr Thomas, who lives in Virginia, USA, was joyously reunited with Ms Durrant on Skype in November but New Zealand airline AirNZ this month sponsored a round trip for the veteran to meet his former love in person in Adelaide.

The couple’s reunion was captured on camera by Australian news channel 9News.com.au.

“Here we are! Well you’re still vertical,” Ms Durrant said as Mr Thomas hugged her in the film captured at the airport.

The old friends plan to spend their trip making up for lost time.
