Emily and James were once again the most popular baby names in Northern Ireland in 2016.

The Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency published the top names for boys and girls on Thursday - with Emily topping the girls' names list for the fourth year in a row.

This is only the second time that James has held the top boy name spot, despite being in the top five since records began in 1997.

Coming in second in the top boys names was Jack, which which held the top spot for 12 consecutive years between 2003 and 2014.

Oliver came in third place, with Charlie, Noah and Harry all making the top ten.

The name Ezra climbed the greatest number of places to join the top 100 names for boys, rising from 126 in 2015 to 88 in 2016.

Meanwhile, Alfie and Jacob were new entries into the boy’s top 10, replacing Jake and Thomas.

Colby, Hendrix, Kiefer, Prince and Woody were some of the less common names given to baby boys in 2016.

On the girls' list Grace has taken second place in the top 10 for the third time in four years, whilst Olivia comes a close third.

Elsie climbed the greatest number of places to join the top 100 names for girls, moving from 155th place  in 2015 to 59th in 2016.

Lily and Sophia also rose in popularity to join the girl’s top 10, replacing Aoife and Lucy.

Some of the less common names given to baby girls in 2016 were Cinderella, Dallas, Gigi, Melania and Scout.

Meanwhile, Ireland Central Statistics office has yet to release the list of the nation's most popular baby names in 2016, but in 2015 Jack and Emily topped the list.

More than 750 Jacks were welcomed by happy parents in Ireland in 2015 while Emily reclaimed the top spot on the list as the most popular female name with 626 tots registered.

James, Daniel, Conor and Sean remain amongst the five most popular baby boy names in 2015, where they have placed since 2007 while Emma, Ava, Sophie and Amelia were the most frequently chosen names for baby girls in 2015.
