An American bride and groom found a special way to include their grandmothers in their wedding ceremony by inviting them to join the wedding party as bridesmaids.
Maggie (22) and Josh Wakefield from Pennsylvania were married last month and asked their grandmothers Joyce Benedict (75) and Drue Fitzgerald (74) to wear matching outfits and feature in their ceremony. The pair chose their outfits together, making sure not to clash with the bridesmaids.
"They were both so excited. They were touched," Maggie Wakefield told Today.com.
"My grandma has been a huge support in my life. She helped raise my older sister and me," she said.
The photographs have circulated on social media and Maggie admitted that the grannies are chuffed with their new-found fame.
"They just can't believe it, wrapping their minds around the internet," she said. "I told them they were social media queens. They think it's great."
It wasn’t just the grannies who shone on the day, as Maggie’s grandfather Ronald walked her down the aisle. Her father lost a battle with colon cancer in 2013, but Maggie carried a photograph of him in her bouquet.
"He was so nervous, but I think he was really honoured to do it," she said.
"I wouldn't think of anyone else, other than my father, to walk me down the aisle."
