"I love the freedom that cycling gives you - the perpetual movement, the speed, the countryside as it flashes by. It's exhilarating, whatever the weather, and I am happy to go out in the sun, wind or rain.
"It sounds obvious, but wherever possible, people should use cycle lanes. Always wear a helmet, know your bike and your area, and exercise caution at all times. Safe cycling is no less fun. By the way, we should teach everybody about how to replace a tube!
"I have so many favourite routes: Atlantic Drive, Achill; Aughagower over the hills to Tourmakeady, wild and beautiful; Pontoon; Lough Conn; Windy Gap to Castlebar; and the Ring of Kerry, of course, particularly that part out over Cúm an Choiste and Castlecove.
"As well as continuing the bike-to-work scheme, it's amazing how a small financial incentive changed people's attitude to owning a bike. It has been a big success so we should continue to expand the scheme.
"Another way to support cycling is to link up the country with a 10-year programme of greenway expansion and development. It works best when we involve communities and when people in the various localities take ownership of their section of a cycle way. We can use old rail lines, canal tow paths, mountain trails etc. The potential is enormous.
"Ireland is beautiful and the beauty of our landscape is often best observed on a bike. We can become a top cycling destination."
