UP to 500,000 visitors are expected to visit the country's inaugural Winterval festival which celebrates a pre-Christmas tradition of medieval times.
The new festival in Waterford includes a number of "firsts" for Ireland, including the free Sol Luminaire Lightshow.
Details of the event were launched by TV3's 'Ireland AM' presenter Anna Daly.
In keeping with tradition established in medieval times the festive Winterval market will take over the heart of the medieval city.
Anna Daly said the festival is about "creating memories" and enjoying the real magic of Christmas.
"That's what's so different about Winterval, it's not all about shopping.
There are lots of real things to do that will be of appeal to all of us, young and old," she added.
