Blanaid Hennessy

The emphasis on decorating your home for every holiday going is becoming a strain for some -- well, probably most -- of us.

Why spend your hard-earned cash on fancy paraphernalia that is stashed away after a few weeks? But then, you have to admit that Christmas is special and a house decked out in festive regalia looks wonderful.

And yet my aversion to settling for just one look for an extended period means I haven't committed to a single Christmas decorating style. Also, what you buy this year should make an appearance again next year, with perhaps a couple of extra bits and bobs added to the collection.

Yes, that constitutes a commitment crisis in my book. So, to help myself and others like me, I've narrowed it down to three main styles -- funky, vintage and Scandinavian.

My current drained-of-colour surroundings tell me that Scandinavian might win, but then my heart remembers the jumble of colour of childhood Christmases, and I lean toward the mish-mash of funky.

Just as I decide on that, I remember movie scenes featuring trees laden with Victorian-style elegance, and my brain forgets my initial opinion.

So, here's a round up of what's on offer in Ireland and online -- which collection will win you over?
