Bright future: Triona McCarthy on this season's new arrivals
From Clinique's colourful Crayola collaboration, to the nail trend that looks set to dominate the year, our beauty buff has a look at some of the new arrivals
Right, so we have to talk about Carrie Fisher. I loved her humour, and followed her on Twitter. When trolls took to social media to talk about how she looked in the Star Wars: The Force Awakens, almost 40 years after her first appearance as a 19-year-old, Carrie posted: "Please stop debating about whether or not I aged well. Unfortunately it hurts all three of my feelings. My body hasn't aged as well as I have."
It's hard to believe she's gone now.
That got me thinking about growing older, and how every stage of life brings challenges and changes, even in our beauty routine. What worked decades ago could be a disaster nowadays.
A great foundation in the correct colour, applied properly, will take years off your face, in the same way that a great pair of jeans can make you look the biz!
My top tip is to have your foundation impeccably matched to your skintone, and use it sparingly. Go too light and it will make your skin appear flat and lifeless. Go too dark, and your skin will look dull.
If you fancy a new foundation, the new Armani Power Fabric foundation with SPF 25, above, €49, is a high-coverage base, yet it has a lightweight feel, a natural finish, and it gives skin a lovely luminosity.
A foundation that has a long-wearing, matte finish, such as Chanel's new Le Teint Ultra Tenue Ultrawear Flawless Foundation, below, €50, works really well on femmes d'une certain age.
Typical! On the weekend I'm staying at home, hanging out on the couch, I have the skin of a supermodel. The weekend I have a zillion things to go to - boom! - a whopper spot will appear! If you're dealing with a blemish, gently buff it with a clean, damp facecloth. Apply spot cream and moisturiser, then gently dab on concealer, blend and, voila: good to glow!
Dear Clinique & Crayola,
Just a note to say my daughter Mini and I are super excited about your collaboration.
Actually, Mini, who's two, has been all over this for quite a while already.
Mini is quite a colourful character, and loves nothing more than colouring in. Her face. With Crayola crayons, pretending that she is mum, putting on her Clinique lippie.
So this new 10-shade, limited-edition Crayola for Clinique Chubby Stick Intense Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm collection, above, €20.50 each, in colours like Mauvelous, Razzmatazz, Mango Tango, and Tickle Me Pink, is everything to us!
We're delighted there isn't a white one, as we never really know what to do with white crayons. Just saying. So yeah, we like to keep calm and colour! That's all. Keep up the good work.

Mirror, mirror, on my NAILS!
Yes, the biggest nail trend this season is, wait for it, ultra-reflective nails with a mirror-like finish. My Insta feed is full of chrome-nails pics, and I'm now freakin' fully obsessed.
If you think it's a bit too much for the office, then try the trend on your toes instead. In Dublin, Tropical Popical is the place to get any on-trend manicure or pedicure looks.
In case you've been under a rock, or in a coma for the last year, this salon is where the actor Saoirse Ronan, above, gets her talons tended, as she - repeatedly - told talk-show host Ellen de Generes last year. It's here you can get this particular look done - or any other, come to that - along with a Lilt served in a coconut. The dream sitch!

I don't judge people by the colour of their skin, I judge people by the colour of their teeth! Seriously. I'm obsessed with white teeth, because my own are so flipping yellow, I can't believe they're not butter!
Now I know yellow teeth are actually stronger than white teeth, and all that malarkey but come on, white teeth just look so sophisticated.
I've tried everything to brighten my teeth, with pretty crap results, until I discovered Spotlight Teeth White Strips, above, €39.95, a new innovative teeth-whitening system, designed and formulated by Irish dentists Dr Lisa and Vanessa Creaven.
These clever clogs used their experience in their own practice to develop a product that is as effective as in-house bleaching systems, but safe enough to use yourself at home. This makes it the first product of its kind to be an effective alternative to in-house dental whitening systems, which I hate!
It uses the same ingredients as professional clinics to whiten your teeth without causing sensitivity.
I have the most sensitive teeth in the world, but I haven't had any sensitivity with these.
Simply pop the strips on your teeth for 30 minutes every night for two weeks, and you'll see the difference.
Your at-home blowdry is about to get a whole lot easier, thanks to my latest discovery - Ibiza brushes, above, from €17.16 at shampoo.ie.
These coveted hairbrushes are super light and gentle on the hair, but have an outstanding grip, and leave my hair feeling silky and looking shiny. They are ergonomically designed, and made from eco-friendly, flexible, resilient cork, and a blend of natural boar and heat-resistant carbon-fibre bristles, so no breakages.
