Apropos the controversy over the triple clash of major events, over to Paul Porteous, CEO of the Contract Bridge Association of Ireland.

"Camrose dates are fixed by Bridge Great Britain and notified to us years in advance. As long as the modern competition is in existence, the first full weekend in January is given over to Camrose weekend No 1. This year it is our turn.

"Waterford Congress requested and been allocated the first full weekend in January.

"From the players' perspective, they need to know well in advance so they can plan their schedules.

"From the Congress point of view, they need to know the venue is available.

"The two events mentioned have been included in various draft calendars since early in 2014 and without change in the final version from May 2015.

"Responsibility for any non-national events then passes to the regions. Dublin South officials decided on their schedule in late summer 2015 in full knowledge of the events scheduled nationally."

Don't push too hard or you may pay a big price. Danger here is to drive NS into a slam they have not bid - and probably won't.
