A young man (20) has died and six others hospitalised after a three car collision in Galway this afternoon.

The serious accident happened on the Headford to Glencorrib road and involved two cars and a jeep.

The 20-year-old was fatally injured when the car he was driving, and was the sole occupant of, was involved in the crash with a jeep and another car.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body removed to Hospital.

The driver and three passengers of the second car were taken to University Hospital Galway with injuries described as not life threatening.

The driver and passenger of the jeep were also taken to University Hospital Galway and the driver is described as being in a serious condition.

Gardai and emergency services were called to the scene of the collision just before 2pm.

The road has been closed off at the scene of the accident and diversions are in place.

The road is expected to be closed for a number of hours.
