Young woman dies after two pedestrians hit by a car early this morning

A YOUNG woman has died after she was one of two pedestrians struck by a car in the early hours of the morning.

The incident occurred at Aucloggeen, Claregalway, County Galway this morning, at approximately 12.30am

"Two pedestrians were struck by a car just off the N17 at Aucloggeen," a garda spokesman said.

"A female, 24 years, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at scene. Her body was taken to University College Hospital Galway where a post mortem is to be arranged."

The other pedestrian - a young man also aged 24 - was taken to University College Hospital Galway with non life threatening injuries. The driver of the car was uninjured.

The road is currently closed as Garda Forensic Collision Investigators examine the scene and diversions are in place.
