Young rider relishing her place on home team competing for top trophy
A YOUNG Irish rider has jumped her way into the big time, landing a coveted spot on the Nations Cup team competing for the Aga Khan Cup at the Dublin Horse Show today.
At just 23, Nicola FitzGibbon was gobsmacked yesterday to discover she will be one of the four members of the Irish team who will aim to secure the trophy for the home side for the the first time since 2004.
After graduating in electronic engineering from Trinity last year, Nicola decided to try her luck in the competitive world of international showjumping for a year.
The year is just up, but it looks like the horses will continue to edge out engineering -- and a good performance would put her in contention for a place on the Irish team aiming to qualify for the Olympics next month.
"It's unbelievable for me to be chosen for the Nations Cup here as a few years ago I was just one of the crowd looking in. Of course there will be butterflies in my stomach but in a good way," she said.
"It's all down to my horse Puissance who is just amazing and has gone from strength to strength, doing whatever I ask of him."
