Gardai are investigating a suspected hit and run accident that killed a young pedestrian last night.

The body of the man, in his 20s, was found lying on the side of the road on the Rathmolyon to Summerhill Road in Meath at approximately 8.50pm last night.  He had suffered fatal injuries in the accident, according to gardai.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to Our Lady’s Hospital in Navan.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the collision failed to remain at the scene, a garda spokesman added.

Local councilor Damien O'Reilly (FF) said: "I want to pass on my sympathies over this tragic event. I want to appeal to anyone who was on that road to contact Trim garda station.

"The community is shocked. To see a young lad die tragically in these circumstances. Everyone is thinking of the poor family.
