A young father-of-two has died after he was struck by a vehicle near his home in Connemara.

Mairtin McGrath, who was in his early 40s, died after he was struck by the vehicle as he spoke with a neighbour on the road near his home at Cill Chiaráin.

Mr McGrath, who was married with two young children died at the scene of the collision, which occurred at around 11am on a straight stretch of road. The driver of the car was said to be in shock at the scene.

Mr McGrath was from the local area where he ran a successful sand-blasting business. His wife Cassie, son and daughter and parents, who lived nearby, were being comforted by friends and family yesterday.

Local shop owner Richard McDonagh said the entire community had been left shocked by the tragedy.

“He was a lovely young man and I just want to pass my condolences on to his family. We’re a small community here and we all know and work along with each other. It’s such a shock,” he added.

Emergency services and gardai from Clifden attended the scene and the road between Cill Chiaráin and Rosmuc was closed to facilitate a Garda forensic collision examination.

Witnesses to the collision are asked to contact the Gardai in Clifden Garda Station on 095 - 22500, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
