A young One Direction fan had a lucky escape when a stranger threw bleach at him from an overhead window as he left Croke Park.

Speaking on RTE's Liveline programme, his mother Deirdre described how her young son's perfect night turned into a disaster after the concert.

“One Direction put on an excellent show. He had a great time, he was singing along to all the songs. Everything was great, right down to the security and the gardai.

“We came out and we were shown what way to go.

"We were heading back to Abbey Street to get the Luas, following the directions the gardai gave us.

“We were walking up the street and the rain was getting heavier. I said to my son to put on a raincoat but he wanted people to see the One Direction T-Shirt he bought at the concert. It was €25 of his own money and he wanted to spend it to get this shirt.

“As we were walking we felt a lot of water fall on us. We thought it might have fallen from a tree but there were no trees around.

“I looked up and I saw one window open with no lights on. It was only when my son said to me ‘Mum, that smells like the swimming pool’ that I thought,  Oh my God, they’ve just thrown bleach out the window at us.”

She explained how it could have been much worse had her son not been wearing a One Direction baseball cap.

“His One Direction hat was the only thing that protected him. If he had of wiped his face, he could have ingested it and it would have been a totally different story. We could have been in hospital.”

Deirdre and her husband travelled from Cork to take their son to see his idols perform in Croke Park on Sunday night.

Deirdre told stand-in host Philip Boucher Hayes she could not believe why someone would do something so dangerous, especially considering the age group of the audience.

“My son said ‘what did that bold person do that for’ and I couldn’t answer him. I just thought it was so wrong. There was no trouble or drinking going on. These were all kids rushing to get home. They were all tired.”

It was only when the family got back to a relative’s house in Clondalkin, that she noticed how the One Direction t-shirt her son had just bought was destroyed.

“When we got back to my sister-in-law's house, I looked at his t-shirt that was black and it was absolutely destroyed. I tried to get a permanent marker to cover it.

“He had such a good night and everything had gone great. He got to see his heroes perform and for this to happen he couldn’t fathom.”
